“How much should I charge for a takeaway coffee?” It is a common question and, as I do a bit of travelling about, I thought I would randomly survey what cafes charge for coffee across the state.
In each case, the café I visited was not one we supply, in a town or suburb where we don’t have a customer. All prices are for a single shot, full-cream flat white as a takeaway.
First up was a trip to the coast.
Wollongong
A nice café with a groovy fit-out:
- $5.00 for a 6oz, $5.50 for a large
- Decaf $1 extra, alternative milk $1 extra
- 10% Sunday surcharge.
Sydney
I headed north to Sydney to see some friends and had coffee at their local cafe near Manly:
- $5.00 for a 6oz, $6.00 for large
- Alternative milk $0.50 extra
Next, I headed back out into the regions.
Southern Highlands
A bakery café:
- $4.75 for a regular, $5.25 for a large
- Alternative milk $0.50 extra
A busy, bustling regional café
- $4.90 for a regular, $5.90 for a large
- Alternative milk $0.50 extra
Blue Mountains
A café in a town we don't have any customers:
- $4.80 for a regular, $5.80 for a large
- Alternative milk $1 extra
Moving outside of cafes, I thought it would be interesting to see what McDonalds are charging. They put a floor in the market. A small flat white is listed as $5.30 on their website. The closest one to us in Bathurst, however, sells them for $4.30. I have heard, but not confirmed, that McDonalds does have different pricing for coffee depending on the location.
I hope this helps you with some of your pricing decisions. As costs for cafés have gone up a lot, it is worth considering a coffee cup price rise.
